The Electronic Privacy Information Center, a privacy advocacy group, filed a law suit against the U.S. government to stop the screenings. Supporters of the group felt that the screeners would use the process salaciously or for ridicule.

However a solution to this problem may have been found. With new software, now a screener will see an avatar of a generic human being. It has been reported the look of this new image will be a regular guy wearing a baseball cap. However any hidden weapons or other items will still be visible to the screeners.

While full-body scanning remains voluntary, it is estimated that 98% of individuals select the full-body scan over alternate methods of screening. At present the TSA screeners for the full body scans are located in a separate closed room. Having an avatar image would not require this nod to further privacy.

While all telescopes today are computerized, LOFAR has gone further. LOFAR is in fact a computer which has been designed to function as a telescope.

LOFAR incorporates over 25,000 radio antennas that have been situated throughout the Netherlands and in Europe, providing for outstanding image resolution and detection sensitivity. The flexibility that the telescope affords astronomers is unique; the ability to seek out ultra high energy cosmic rays, weak radio emissions, other varied radio signals and even the possibility of discovering signals from a SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) source. However a primary function will be LOFAR’s ability to peer into the early period of the universe.

Observing the night sky and the stars is literally looking back in time. By observing a galaxy like Andromeda, we are looking back perhaps several million years. While initial plans for the technology are to build it into laptop bags and backpacks, in the not too distant future there are plans to integrate the technology into clothing, like a shirt. This way you wouldn’t have to keep checking your laptop for that critical email you are waiting for. You would just have to look down at your sleeve.

The ElekTex fabrics are made up of layers of woven nylon and carbon-saturated nylon that not only bend but are able to be washed. Due to its nature it has the ability to be sewn, glued and even heat-welded to other fabrics.

There are plans to be able to incorporate a flexible touch pad in to the construction of the materials. Display screens that can bend and be washed are currently being worked on.

But perhaps the very best applications and uses of this technology haven’t even been thought of yet. Any ideas?

Microsoft’s Solution to Blurry Pics

Ever taken a picture just to find it’s blurry. Cameras today have image stabilizers to help resolve this issue, but their effectiveness can only go so far. That’s why researchers at Microsoft have been working on better algorithms to make up for the shaky hands of the photographer. Basically, the Microsoft researchers used sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) in the camera to detect and measure any movement that occurred while the picture was being taken. Then the camera adjusted for this movement so that the picture goes from blurry to sharp. This could result in better image stabilizing software in future digital cameras so your pictures will be sharper than ever.

New BlackBerry Torch Available from AT&T

Beginning on August 12, 2010, BlackBerry is launching a new line of smartphone. It’s the first BlackBerry that has a touch screen, as well as a pull out keyboard. It will be available exclusively with AT&T and with the price tag of only $199, it will be attractive to many people looking for an upgrade. 1. If your keyboard is a standalone component, unplug it from the computer first. Then tip it upside down and shake it. This will get the loose particles and debris out.

2. Turn your keyboard back over to its original position and use compressed air to blow out any other particles that were left behind after shaking it. You may want to do this step outside in a well-ventilated area due to some of the chemicals in the can of compressed air. Spray in between the keys and then turn the keyboard upside down again and shake out any debris that the compressed air has knocked loose.

3. Clean each key surface by combining a diluted solution of water and dishwashing liquid. Use a mildly damp cloth and clean the various oils, dust and dirt from each key. If you do this regularly, you can simply use a cloth dampened with plain water. Dry each key with a dry cloth.

4. Vacuum the keyboard. You can either use a miniature vacuum or the dusting attachment on your normal vacuum to clean off any dirt or debris that has been left behind.

5. If some keys are sticking, you can gently pry off the problem keys with a small screwdriver and use your damp cloth or cotton swab to clean beneath the surface of the keyboard. Only the number and letter keys should be taken off, though. The space bar and larger keys are too difficult to replace so you may want to have a professional fix those if those keys are sticking. Also, be sure to make note of where the keys go before you pry them off so you can put them back into their original spot.
